How It Works

    A loved one fills out the ‘Create A Kite’ Form above and submits their message to the Kitemail team.

    Kitemail verifies the message meets the Indiana Department of Corrections mail guidelines.

    Once approved, the message is formatted into a Kite, printed, and sent to the designated recipient.

Simply fill out the ‘Create a Kite’ Form above with your recipients information, your personalized messaged, and accompanying image.

You’ll need to know your loved one’s Department of Corrections number to submit the form. If you don’t know it, you can locate it on the DOC website here.

Hit submit and the Kitemail team will take it from there.

Every Tuesday, KiteMail reviews all submissions and our Kite team applies photos and message to our post cards.

Postcards are mailed on Wednesday mornings.

Because this is a mailed in a postcard format, all messages and photos are viewable by anyone handling the postcard.

Once your loved one receives your postcard with your address,  they may have access to materials – paper, pencils, pens, and stamps – to write back to you.

We are preparing a Sky pack for your loved one and these will be available in Spring 2025

Today we are focused on one image/photo per Kite.Please know you can submit multiple Kites – we recommend sending one per week.

Each Kite is formatted as a standard 4″ x 6″ postcard with full color images and a handwriting-script font.

The front of each postcard will feature the sender’s customizations and the back will include recipient and Kitemail sponsor information.

Each Kite includes space for a personalized message of 700 characters or less.

You can check the length of your message at the bottom of the form’s message field. 

Our sponsors – institutions advocating for justice involved families – pay for the Kites (postcards) and the Sky Packs (because the Sky’s the Limit) and we mail postcards and packs based on available funding.

The counter on the ordering page will show the number of Kites available (Sky Packs will be available in Spring 2025).

Please note that if the counter is at 0 your message is waitlisted for the next funding round.  We will be in contact to let you know approximately when it will be mailed
